We just had the same experience with a recommendation from my younger brother. We totally missed "Arrested Development" when it came out, and from the Jason Bateman movies we've seen, weren't sure that was such a bad thing. But we picked up the DVDs this summer and basically steamed through all three seasons in a couple of weeks. And I must say, I'm not sure we could have stayed sane through the moving process without it! It's been just the respite we needed.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who cried. :) I think they left themselves wide open for anything, including spin-offs, reunion shows, a movie... wait, that was the Brady Bunch, wasn't it?

It was exactly the opposite of the Will and Grace finale, in which they sewed up every loose end AND jumped into the future to be certain there was no reason to have a reunion, spin off, etc. Neither approach is very satisfying, in my opinion.

But I definitely think the writers of a show owe it to the 'fans' to leave it with a satisfying ending.

Otherwise you feel jipped. I remember the Cheers finale -- what an opportunity to have Diane and Sam end up together... what harm would have been in that?

How about the Seinfeld ending? Could that possibly have been worse?

Even the Wonder Years... why couldn't Kevin have ended up with Winnie? And what purpose did it serve to have them say that Jack Arnold died two years after he lived his dream of opening the furniture store?

Why?

If the show's logical conclusion doesn't match its years-long run, it leaves everyone dissatisfied.

I thought Kate Walsh blew everyone out of the water. She was fantastic & is undoubtably a leading lady if ever there was one.

Certainly more talented than the insipid Ellen Pompeo, & she can do both comedy & drama which I think is where the spin-off is aimed.

Glad to see Kate Walsh's talents recognised & nice to see her more than the 2 mins a week she usually gets on Greys.

Bring the spin-off on !

Well, seeing as how I am a spoiler addict, I don't want to go into details about how the show will wrap up. However, I doubt there will be a wedding of any kind for any of the characters and no real idea of where people end up.

Maybe that is better since it is the perfect quintessential American town (and therefor doesn't exist) so we can create our own ending for them all.

I highly doubt a spin-off of any kind is going to happen. The CW doesn't seem interested in creating any shows that are character based shows without a sci-fi twist.

Also Alexis wants to depart from her role as Rory and I can't imagine how a spin-off would work without her at least occasionally dropping in. I truly think the only spin-off would come from her choosing a job away from mom and creating a new life for herself, but then you lose the beloved shangri-la of Stars Hallow.

The thought here in Bloomington is that Rorie can't marry Logan, that we'll have some heartbreaking refusal. Can't quite articulate why it won't work, but it just doesn't seem like it can. What do you think?

And if they were to try to spin something off, what do you think it should/will be? I have definite feelings about what won't work, given the "whole-town" involvement for a big chunk of the show. Just doesn't really seem like the spin off type of vehicle, actually.

There were other homosexual characters prior to Ellen, and other noted homosexuals on TV -- such as the Billy Crystal character in 'Soap,' the character 'Matt' in Melrose Place...

Billy Jean King and Martina Navratilova had already 'come out' long before that, and though they didn't have TV shows designed around them, their homosexuality wasn't exactly hidden.

I didn't watch 'Ellen' much, but I remember before she came out that she 'practiced' as a heterosexual. I don't know how the show 'explained' that away after she came out publicly.

Then there's someone like Ann Heche who was... then wasn't... then was, then now, she's married with children.

I don't see Ellen as a catalyst of change, just a reflection in greater society towards 'acceptance' of issues. Don't forget, this was just a few short years after the 'don't ask/don't tell' debate...

I suspect that it's not so much that TV is a catalyst for change, more that programmes are created by culturally-savvy people who see which way the wind is blowing (e.g. because their friends are already at the forefront of social change). Then the programmes that they create help to draw the rest of us in the same direction.

Undoubtedly, TV is an art-form (albeit a populist one), and like all art, it exerts a strong influence over contemporary culture.

Haven't seen this show but thought Neil Patrick Harris was amazing playing Lee Harvey Oswald on Broadway in "Assassins." He made the character seem almost sympathetic. (Of course the script also slanted information in favor of the various murderers depicted.)

So I think I go you one better--I ask my friends who are devotees to summarize the shows for me. I do this not only with shows I've seen or used to watch regularly before something disrupted my schedule, but also with shows I've never seen and may never intend to. I like getting the condensed, intense version without waiting. I've done the same thing with movie plots, particularly horror movies that I didn't think I could "handle," for years. What does that make me, more obsessed or less?
